Grand Canyon April 2004

Friday

When we arrived at the park, it was very gloomy outside. We had just had a snowy drive through the mountains from Flagstaff, and we weren't expecting to see too much right away.

Yavapai Observation Station: Chris and baby posing in front of the sign that showed what we were supposed to be looking at.

This is funny, Daddy!

The first day, the park reminded me of Acadia-- except for the occasional prickly pear on the side of the path. :) I felt a little more sorry for all those Maine tourists who get stuck shopping, or taking pictures of wet seagulls, on foggy days. I never felt particularly bad for them when I was stuck waiting on them at the grocery store!

We decided to walk to Mather Point and see if the clouds were any thinner over there. All we could see were glimpses of rock on the south rim (where we were standing) and the sense of a steep drop-off. It was mysterious, all right.

Mather Point: starting to see more ahead. We were so excited when we started being able to see things across the canyon. Anything at all, at that point...!

Yes, that's Charlotte under there!

The rest of our family arrived later that evening. We were glad to see them.

The next morning, we got up early to go see the sunrise. It was too snowy to see much of anything sun-related, but we did get a lot of nice views when the sun started burning off the fog.

After breakfast, we went back out and there it was... yay!

We walked from Yavapai Point to the village where the restaurants and shops are - not a long or difficult walk, but with a lot of stops for pictures and peeking over the edge, it took until lunchtime. (handy!) Charlotte slept in her stroller most of the morning.

Lunchtime! We ate at the Arizona Room twice and it was very tasty. I wondered what they would think when we came back with Charlotte, since she was really upset at dinner, but it worked out.
