Vicki, right now you're using about 4.485 megs, but that's just an estimate That is not bad at all, and it's certainly not more than your share, which I've left open ended. As far as I'm concerned, you're ok.
As for checking your directory size, FTP Explorer is still using the ftp language, which is somewhat primitive still. As far as I know, that language doesn't support giving directory sizes in a direct way, but I'm not sure about that. Chiefwagonburner would be a good person to ask. I'll ask him at work today. We've been entertaining clients who are in San Diego for training sessions, so we haven't been around much. It's been fun though.
I'm totally late too. I'm supposed to be there in 13 minutes, and I haven't even showered yet.

jimmy, may i ask you (at your convenience) to check how much space i'm taking up with my directory on here? i don't want to use more than my share. haven't figured out how to get FTP Explorer to tell me how big my folder is. thanks!

Really? Wow. I don't have any problem with anyone saving the images to his or her computer. I'm not much of a stickler for intellectual property, although I think I would probably be upset if someone then went and made a ton of money off of my exact image. But who in this economy has money for art, anyway? Nah, I take it as a complement, even though "ruining the real thing forever" is a funny way of putting it! And in some way the most incisive declaration about my work any has possibly ever made. I am intensely interested in what we believe to be "real" and not. :)

A strnage thing happened this morning. I have been trying to direct my dreams, without much success I might add. Anyway this morning as I got out bed half asleep half awake and third half indifferent (I'm a man of many halves) an image flashed in my mind. It was the picture of your creation Anna! You've runied the real thing for me forever! How will you ever make it up to me?
Nice.
Incidentally I have saved the pictures in my own drive here. No copyright issues I hope. The one with the stars shining is Night and the other is Day.bmp

Thanx Z, for the quick reply. I will find that initial email, and perhaps discover the inner secfrets toi ftp heaven, Heh! I know most of this stuff is intuitive, easily learned. I've done some of it before! My laziness forced me to ask. Thanx again!
Anna, that's great! To have designs based on actual stars, may bring a higher worth to the pieces, at least I'd so value them!
Chief, I wanted to say how great that article was about the businesses who are thinkng about becoming more environmentally friendly, better resolved to address employee concerns, etc. That is a big step for business! That is how modern society may learn to understand the needs of its individual constituants. Perhaps society learns as does individual humans. After so many failures, it redesigns itself to work within the principles which do work. Eventually the Devil himself, must agree with God's plan. Every person is equal, every person is important, love everyone, be loved by everyone, enjoy eternally that revelation!
Whew, I sure am full of ideals! Then again, an ideal is only as good as the moment when it is applied. Some came too soon. Some too late. World Wide Love and Wonder is right on time. At least that is my belief!
Peace All!

Oh, Anna. Whoever or whatever designed our universe seems to have 'eyeballed' it too.
Awwa, if I wasn't getting ready for a big ol' work thing, I'd give you an ftp tutorial. While the FTP language hasn't changed much, there have been programs made which stand between you and the FTP code to create a more "moving files around on your desktop" feel.
Check the first email you got. There is plenty of space on xenius for your (___)(__.), pal.
Here are two programs from the hive which you can use to build your webpage.
1st Page 4.9 mb
This is a web page editor. If you don't know html, it allows you to download webpages and glance at their code, previewing any changes you make. It's a good way to learn html. Within a short amount of time, you should be making pretty decent pages.
And....
FTP Explorer 661 kb
This is an ftp program which should be semi-intuitive. If I could figure it out, you should surely have no problem with it. It's all I use now, even while the 1st Page program above has FTP capability, I've completely ignored it and used FTP Explorer. Just remember our ftp site is ftp.xenius.org, not www.xenius.org.
Neither of these programs are to be confused with Front Page or Internet Explorer. Both of those are Windows programs which have the same functionality as their demi-namesakes, 1st Page and FTP Explorer. (Yes, you can FTP with IE, but I haven't got time to show you how! Bummer. It's very easy.)
Some people on xenius have asked me how to build a page or ftp to the site, and each time, I'd type up a whole page and send it off. If I were brighter, I'd have made a template and sent it to everyone. I will try to find some of those and sent one to you sometime tonight.
Anyhow, check your first few emails from me if you have them. In it I gave you the key to your space, and probably a few bits of advice on how to get into it.
ciao! ___________________________________________
Slightly edited version of the Fall (EQ). This one might be more detailed than that last one I put up. . Headphones reign supreme over speakers. I had only shown them how to play the tune 5 minutes earlier, so I'm excited it came out sounding quite close to the version in my head. Maybe I said that already? We only have a few practices left before TXLast night my brother and I went to dinner with a friend of our family's, an INCREDIBLY beautiful Trinidadian woman whom neither of us knew at all.
Over dinner, my brother informed me that he had brought his silk screen machine to our parent's house, and I flipped out with joy at the Italian resturaunt. I may have embarrassed myself. All we need is emulsifier, he said, and we could have shirts for 2 bucks a piece. So...Xenius and Heroes of the Underclass shirts are on their way!
When they're done, I'll let y'all know. Maybe you'll want some? HOTU and xenius shirts'll be free for y'all. You know.
Never for money, always for love.
-and since my brother is trying to start a t-shirt making business, I am sure he wouldn't mind quoting a price if you sent him your own design ideas.

Awwa, I did use a photographic source when placing the stars. I found a good image online, printed it out, and used it as a reference. I would not try to claim much accuracy, though. I didn't measure the placements very accurately. I just "eyeballed it".

Hey everybody! My limited web access (only from home), has brought me more inline with normal, less hyper/manically motivated people, Heh! But I make no garantees, a sudden twelve post stream may be only a weird idea away!
Ashok, you ommitted my patented "butt with a gunshot wound."
(___)(__.)
Other interpertations might be a tatoo, a birthmark, a pimple, etc.
Anna, you have conquered the medium! Those pics are great, I'm sure the Art even greater! Perhaps you've invented a new velvet painting technique? In any case, they look very successful! One question, are they based on actual telescope/sky views? Are those identifiable stars/starscapes? Not that they should be, but that if they are, you have an even greater marketability. Either way, you tickle my excitement gently! The picture(s) look great!
Your question about how to post pictures is a good one. I understand just enough HTML to link to an already online pic. But I would ask if I might have a tutorial for uploading pics from my PC. I have music and pictures I'd love to share with you. But my FTPing skills are sorely lacking. This is true especially if there is space available for me to archive items, and then link them to posts. I understand some webpage file, folder, subfolder, etc, structures. I just don't understand how to get from A (my PC) to B (Xenius available filespace). I am interested in building a homepage here if possible. But I don't mean any of this in a pushy way. It is available or not? I can teach myself to use it, with or without a tutorial. Then again, there are a few details (web addys, access and such) which are necessary. You can email any personal or sensitive material directly to awwa1@yahoo.com
I got a new song. It's supposed to sung by Maurice Chevalia (sp?) or similar foreigner, giving the song a French/International angst. I imagine accordian, and, or harmonica, and, or mandolin backup instruments. Bass, a slight/minimal drum, and or other background instruments would work fine, possibly a flute or penny whistle, bongos would probably work. Part of the song is whistled by the singer. Here are the lyrics:
"Sad as Life Is"
Life can be sad You may agree But that's not what It's meant to be Lose your tears And you'll be free Satisfaction garanteed.
Life can be lonely I am told But not so much For one so bold Lose your fears And you will see Life as it Is meant to be.
Love has many Ways to grow For the loving In the know Follow your heart And please be kind Love is there You will find.
Friends may come And friends may go Not always as We might have hoped Bide your time Before too Long Another friend Will come along.
Searching for Our destiny It's not always What we believe Feeling like A rolling stone We may find We're already home.
(Repeat, as often as needed)
Life can be lonely I am told But not so much For one so bold Lose your fears And you will see Life as it Is meant to be.
Peace All!

Thanks, folks. I wasn't ever able to figure out using actual paint on the velvet in any satisfactory way. But the mica is fairly easy. I use a little tiny brush to lift up one flake at a time, and the flakes come in an acrylic medium, so they pretty much stick to the fabric. The medium dries clear, so I just have to be careful that I don't get too much medium on areas that I want to be untouched velvet. I make sure there's enough medium on the underside of the flake so it sticks. It's tedious, but I like working like that. I made one that is a telescope too. I'll post a jpg or two of that one as soon as I get the time to resize the images. I love how the photos turned out, so I'm considering taking the jpgs to get printed and then show those instead of the actual velvet pieces.

those are great, Anna. I love that the stars shine with the flash... neat neat! ah, space. It's so big. I love it. So, how did you work out the problems with the velvet? Or was it not as much of a problem for this because you were using mica flakes? I'm curious...

Jimmy, thank you for such thorough instructions! This little piece is made of mica flakes on black velvet. So the stars are really made out of rocks. It's very small...7 x 4 inches. It is based on an actual photo of stars, so it is slightly accurate but not in any precise sort of way.

I'm glad you guys enjoyed it.
It depends on where you're getting the images, Anna.
If you're getting them from a website, and you don't want to upload them to xenius, you can right click the images on the website and view their properties. This will give you their location, so just copy this location and paste it into your code, which will look like this:
(img src="http://www.xenius.org/glyphs4.jpg") Here, and for the rest of this post, you will want to replace parentheses with brackets, <, >. Once something appears in brackets like that, the code disappears and is executed by the browser.
You do have more control than this though. Using the code above, you will have placed the glyph images at the top of the forum into your post (they're all part of one picture and not seperate), however the glyph image is too large for the forum window and blogger will either freak out or the frame size will stretch. You can control the size that the picture is displayed in by adding height and width dimensions given in pixels, like this:
(img src="http://www.xenius.org/glyphs4.jpg" width="300" height="74")
The result is the following:

The dimensions I chose weren't arbitrary. There might be a better way to do this, but I got them by opening the image in an imaging program like Photoshop or the Gimp and proportionally adjusting the size until I found a suitable set of numbers. Had I chosen arbitrary numbers, I would have stretched or compressed the image for choosing disproportionate numbers. Sometimes this doesn't matter, but we surely would have ended up with oval glyphs, like this:

(img src="http://www.xenius.org/glyphs4.jpg" width="300" height="50") <--oops
Sometimes the websites delete or rename these images after time, especially if they're taken from news sites, so what will happen is you'll end up with a big X'ed out image because the link goes bad. If you want to avoid this, you can just upload them to your xenius directory and start the same process.
Oh yeah...and you can create a border, like this: (img src="http://www.xenius.org/glyphs4.jpg" width="300" height="74" border="1") where the number given for the border is the thickness in pixels.
The result:

All of the photos above were enclosed by html tags to center them except for that last one. You can see the difference, so if you're anal about symmetry like I am: (center)(img src="http://www.xenius.org/glyphs4.jpg" width="300" height="74" border="1")(/center)
The backslash 'turns off' the tag. The browser will center anything that appears between those two tags, and if you forget the (/center) it may very well just center the whole damned forum. Sometimes I post things and forget to turn off the tag, and it screws up the forum, and I get an IM message from the Czarina. This hasn't happened in a long while though. She hasn't chewed me out yet. You can also put an "alt" message so that when someone mouses over the image it displays a little message. Usually the message is just the name of the image.
(center)(img src="http://www.xenius.org/glyphs4.jpg" width="300" height="74" border="1" alt="type your alt message here")(/center)
The result:

I enjoyed the song, too, Jimmy. I hear your agreement. I still don't know how to post .jpgs on this board. *blush* I slept until 2:30pm today. God, what is wrong with me? I am awake, but I can't seem to feel like I'm part of this world.

Jimbo, love the song. Anna, post some pictures :)
I'm doing well. Sat around all day sat, the sun finally came out. Got a bit of color on my nose. Pete and Paul found a (domestic runaway?) bunny and Pete spent the weekend becoming attached to it. Its small and disgustingly cute. Needless to say, it is happy in their back yard (it is amazing).
I was a super consumer on Sunday, bought a bunch of stuff (dropdown table, stuff to make shelves, etc) for my new place. Also bought some glow paint that should be fun for burning man stuff. I want to do some stuff (for bike and something that I can wear) in el wire (think flexible neon), but haven't figured out what my designs will be.
If you say something enough, it will stick. Also: hydrogen, not germs.

*Music really does make life tolerable. I am in deep heated agreement with you on that one, Anna. I want to paint a picture of my agreement. I dunno...like two wild horses in a vast field surrounded by mountains, running in the same faintly discernible arc because they are running together, not leading or following. I'm in that kind of agreement.

This recording was done at the HML cafe today with a stereo microphone placed in the center of the cafe.
*At some point I found myself singing on stage with a mouth full of blood. I still don't know how it happened. It's possible I banged my tooth on the microphone or bit my tongue or some other such shit. It wasn't from my stomach or throat or anything, but I couldn't find the wound. It was pretty creepy.

**post edit** I forgot to mention the other players had only just been introduced to the song five minutes before we played it. It was pretty easy, I guess.
